This rare Guru Marpa statue is crafted with exceptional skill and lifelike detail. In the ancient era of Tibet, where technology was limited, this expertly crafted statue reflects the disciples' profound reverence and gratitude for their master. Revered and carefully preserved by disciples over the centuries, this Guru Marpa statue has been passed down as a precious legacy of devotion.
Guru Marpa holds a meditative gesture in his left hand and a gesture symbolizing subduing obstacles in his right, signifying his role as a guide and protector, representing the wisdom of Shakyamuni Buddha.
In our hearts, the master is a colossal figure of love and compassion, ever-present and omnipresent. Approach Guru with reverence and sincerity, we receive his care and blessings across time and space—indeed, “as boundless as the sky, so boundless is his dharma body.”
Guru Marpa's expression is dignified and serene, his gaze embodies compassion and purity, and his wisdom-filled eyes are gently open, radiating kindness. His warm, heartfelt smile leaves a profound impression on those who revere him, enabling each sincere devotee to connect with his boundless compassion and receive his blessings.
Dressed in an intricately detailed robe adorned with silver beads, Guru Marpa's majestic presence exudes nobility and grace, sitting firmly on a Sumeru throne lotus pedestal. The Sumeru Mountain, vast in scale, symbolizes the cosmic axis; our galaxy is but a grain within it. Guru Marpa, seated upon the Sumeru throne, embodies enlightenment, with an unbreakable vajra-like nature, an infinite dharma body, and boundless spiritual power.
Guru Marpa is revered as the founder of the Kagyu school of Tibetan Buddhism, known for his incredible dedication to spreading the Mahamudra teachings and Vajrayana practices, which enable practitioners to attain enlightenment in a single lifetime. He journeyed to India three times in search of spiritual teachings, where he acquired the highest tantric teachings and translated many essential Sanskrit texts into Tibetan, earning his reputation as a great translator.
Although Marpa did not live as a monk, his spiritual accomplishments were profound, attracting a large following of disciples. His teachings emphasized direct transmission from master to student, focusing on the Mahamudra, a powerful path to realizing one’s true nature through the oral instructions of the Buddha. This path is known for its exceptional efficacy in leading practitioners toward enlightenment.
Marpa was a strict and sometimes fiery teacher, known for his intense demeanor, yet also recognized for his great generosity and humor. His arduous travels to India saw him face countless dangers—crossing snake-infested forests, deserts, and poisonous rivers—and he nearly lost his life thirteen times. Undeterred, he ultimately brought the supreme tantric teachings back to Tibet, where he guided many significant disciples. Among them, four stood out as the “Four Pillars”: Ngok Choku Dorje, Meton Tsonpo, Tsurton Wanggi Dorje, and most famously, Milarepa. Through these disciples, especially Milarepa, Marpa’s legacy flourished, establishing the Tabo Kagyu tradition as one of the most important schools in the renaissance period of Tibetan Buddhism.
